Change Your Habits, Change Your Life

So today I want to share with you an article that I found on CNBC, and it was called the Nine Habits of Highly Successful People. It was an article written by a gentleman named Bob Corley. And Bob Corley wrote this book called Change Your Habits, Change Your Life. It’s a great book, check it out if you’ve never heard of it. But he studied 133 self-made millionaires over a five-year period. And I’m going to share those with you. So, the first habit that most millionaires, or these millionaires did on a regular basis, was they got up early, which is an epic fail for me, because I never get up early. But they get up early and they 50% of them got up three hours prior to their workday. Three hours prior to their workday. So, what they did was they spent that time, tackling personal projects, or whatever they need to do, planning their day, but by the time they were ready to go to work, their minds were on work. Where we kind of do the opposite. We get up in time just to go to work, and we’re rushed and we’re chaotic. They get up three hours early and they take care of that. The second thing they do is they read a lot. You know, 80% said they devote 30 minutes a day to some sort of reading. Personal development or a history book, or self-help, whatever it is, and I don’t know about you but personal development for me, about two years ago really began to impact my life. Hey Andrea. I kind of came to it kicking and screaming because for me to sit down and read a book for 30 minutes is torture, but with the onset of audio books oh my goodness, there’s a plethora of stuff you can do. But that’s one of the things that millionaires did on a regular basis, was they spent 30 minutes every day reading.

Number three which I found kind of unusual, but they spend 15 to 30 minutes every day focused on thinking, which I thought was kind of odd, but they said having time to analyze your thoughts is a stress reduction for people, but they spend that time alone, sometimes it’s in that three-hour period prior to work, but they spend it alone and it’s nothing but focused thinking. Go figure. That one was difficult for me. And then number four is they make time for exercise. Which we all know the benefits of exercise, physically and mentally. But exercise is proven to create motivation in people, but 76% of these self-made millionaires said they spend 30 minutes every single day in some sort of exercise. Walking, jogging, biking, swimming, whatever it is, they spend 30 minutes on a regular basis every single day in exercise. Number five is they spend time with people that inspire them and to me this is huge. We don’t think about millionaires needing people to inspire them, but they do. And let’s be honest, you can be around the wrong people, and your enthusiasm and your goals can tank. You want to be choosy about who you spend your time with. You know Corley said, you are only as successful as those you frequently associate with. That’s kind of powerful. You are only as successful as those you frequently spend your time with. So that’s powerful, I mean, right? So be sure that you kind of limit the people that are toxic in your life, and the people that are negative and spend time with people that inspire you.

Six is they pursue their own goals. See the thing about the wealthy, self-made millionaires, they plan to get rich and they make it happen. I love that. Another thing that’s odd and I never really thought about this, but 80% of the wealthy are obsessed with pursuing their goals. See we talk about goal setting all the time but we’re not obsessed with pursuing them. You should write your goals down, you should be able to see them every single day and you should make them inspire you. The wealthy are obsessed with obtaining, with doing their goals. Number seven is get enough sleep. I get that one down pat, I rate 100 on that one. This group of millionaires, 89% of them slept seven to eight hours a night. I mean for a lot of people that’s a lot of hours, but I do that. See their philosophy is sleep is critical to success. Number eight is they have multiple streams of income. They do not rely on one stream of income. As a matter of fact, 65% had three streams of income. And I know sometimes for a lot of us that’s hard to think about, but that’s just what they do, that’s how they’re successful, they make sure they have more than one stream of income. And finally, they avoid time wasters, and I think this is probably the thing that sucks us in the most, time wasters.

Corley said where we invest our time, is time lost forever. And you know that’s true, we can spend, I don’t know about you but I can, and you probably can too, I can spend an hour scrolling’ through Facebook. Man, that’s a time waster, be careful the apps that you scroll through, or binge-watching on Netflix. Who can’t do that? That’s time you cannot ever get back, so be careful of time wasters. Now, I found this very interesting but what I find most interesting, is there’s nothing’ on here that’s alarming. There’s nothing’ on here that you go oh my gosh I would’ve never thought of that. Everything on here is simple. Everything on here is basic, right? You agree? But see here’s the thing. Most of us don’t do it. These guys do it and do it consistently. They do it daily, these are daily habits. They don’t get up one day a week early, they get every day. They don’t exercise one day a week, they exercise every day. They don’t read personal development books two or three days a week, they do it every day. Daily disciplines practiced consistently will lead to success, that’s their formula for success, and it can be for you too.
